かつて伊勢の国地方は、室町時代に綿の種が伝来し
土、水、天候、冬場の肥料である鰯に恵まれ
一大産地になった。
かつては、農業の副業として始まった木綿づくりも
伊勢商人の手により江戸へと販路は広がり
伊勢の国からきた木綿を「伊勢木綿」と称し
今日も全国津々浦々で、その名を耳にするようになった。
現在、伊勢木綿は地元「臼井織布株式会社」のみでしか
生産されていない非常に貴重な物となり、今なお古き良き
伝統を継承しています。
伊勢木綿は、柔らかな肌触りと、伝統ある色、柄、風合いが今なお多くの人に
愛され続けています。
木綿織物の柄は、基本的に産地による違いは少なく、今も昔も縞や格子柄を中心、
独自性が出るのは糸と染織であり、糸の種類や太さを変えるだけで、織りあがった布の
風合いは千差万別となります。
伊勢木綿は単糸（たんし）という一番ベーシックな糸を使用しています。
それは、切れやすくて織るのが非常に難しく、いい綿を使った単糸でないと
織ることができません。
その、こだわりの単糸を使った伊勢木綿を織り上げるには、１００年以上も前の
豊田式織機を現役で使っています。
伊勢木綿を織るに欠かせないのが歴史ある豊田式の自動織機。
明治時代より受け継がれた、今では製造廃止の豊田左吉による名機。
メンテナンスも臼井社長（臼井織布株式会社５代目現代表取締役社長）
自ら行います。
全国的にも珍しい自動織機が当時と変わらない風合いを生み出す
伊勢木綿。
一反13ｍ織るのに丸１日要するとのことですから
その生産スピードは決して速くはありません。
もし最新式の速く、勢いのある織機で織れば、伊勢木綿の場合
柔らかな単糸を使用するために糸が切れ生産することができません。
History of Ise Momen
After cotton seeds were introduced in Japan during the Muromachi period (16th century) the Ise area became the major cotton cultivation region. This area was blessed with good soil, water, weather and sardines, which were used as fertilizer during the winter.
In the past, producing cotton textiles was a side business to agriculture. Later, the cotton textile market was extended to Edo (present day Tokyo) by Ise merchants. The term, Ise Momen is used to describe cotton textiles from the Ise area and today this term is heard throughout Japan.
Currently, Ise Momen is only produced by the Usui Shokufu Co., Ltd. These very valuable textiles continue to be made using proven traditional inherited methods.
Characteristics of Ise Momen
Ise Momen is popular with many people because of the fabrics’ soft smooth texture with comfortable wear and the traditional colors and patterns.
Similar woven patterns can be found in various cotton producing and weaving areas of Japan with both past and present patterns of stripes and checks being comparable. However, individual character is shown through the choices of thread, dyeing methods and weaving. By changing the type of thread and thicknesses, the woven textiles show a variety of textures.
Ise Momen uses the most basic single thread. Single thread is easy to break, so only high quality cotton threads are used for weaving.
Ise Momen’s high quality single thread weaving is done on Toyota looms that are more than 100 years old.
Toyota Weaving Loom
Ise Momen cannot be produced without using the old Toyota weaving looms. They have been used since the Meiji period (19th century). Now these machines are considered masterpieces made by Sakichi Toyota. Their maintenance is done by Naruo Usui (the 5th president of Usui Shokufu Co., Ltd.).
As Ise Momen is produced by these rare weaving looms, the very soft textiles keep their original texture and memories of the past.
One loom produces one 13 meter roll per day. The slow speed keeps the soft single threads from breaking. These textiles could not be produced on a modern high speed machine, the threads would easily break.
